Winter 2008 Musical: Scrooge!
Building on the sold-out success of the summer’s hit production of “Alice in Wonderland”, the Cabrillo Playhouse's Youth Theatre presented the musical “Scrooge!” This production is the Leslie Bricusse adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol.
Under the veteran direction of 20-year high school drama teacher, Austin Peay, the “Alice” participants blossomed into real performers and were the talk of the town during and after the shows successful run. “These young people came to a first-ever summer camp at the Cabrillo and sang and danced and acted their little hearts out. It was amazing to watch their transformation,” said Nancy Keck the Playhouse board member charged with overseeing the Youth Theatre.
Luckily for the new “Scrooge!” participants, the same directorial team from Alice came back, including: Austin Peay who has directed four plays for the Cabrillo including last season’s very successful, “Caught in the Net,” the equally veteran choreographer/dancer Jimmy Hippinstiel and musical director Debbie Owens. All three have worked extensively and have presented award-winning productions in the South Orange County area.
This sold out show ran from December 11-14 and December 18-21.
Summer 2008 Musical: Alice in Wonderland
This summer, as a part of its 55th year anniversary celebration, the Cabrillo Playhouse presented its first Youth Theatre Project offering Disney’s musical, “Alice in Wonderland.” The production was directed by Austin Peay, a veteran actor/director and 20-year high school drama teacher. Mr. Peay has directed four productions for the Cabrillo including this season’s very successful, “Caught in the Net”. Joining him is veteran choreographer and dancer, Jimmy Hippinstiel. Both have worked extensively in South Orange County and have presented award-winning productions.
“Alice in Wonderland” featured such favorites as, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “I’m Late,” the “Tweedles,” the “Mad Hatter,” and many more. The sold out performances were July 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19.
The objective of this first-class musical production was both to provide young people, ages 8 to 18, a quality musical theatre experience and our audience with a fun-filled evening of entertainment.
The initial musical offering was a grand success so look for more youth theatre next summer!
